Portage County is an outdoor lover’s wonderland all year round. Boating, fishing, water-skiing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking are popular summer activities because of the region’s easy access to more than 40 public lakes and the Wisconsin, Plover and Tomorrow rivers. Excellent trail systems, including the Green Circle  Trail and the Tomorrow River State trails, attract hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. The 275-acre Schmeeckle Reserve on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus is a favorite with birdwatchers, picnickers and nature enthusiasts.

Winter activities include cross-country skiing, skating and sledding, while snowmobile riders find plenty of room to explore as well. Portage County maintains thousands of acres of land and water so that residents and visitors may enjoy camping, water sports, hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation with convenient public access. Local parks also provide residents with plenty of choices, from fitness trails and playgrounds to horseshoe pits, shooting ranges, softball diamonds, and dog exercise areas.
