Trails and Parks
Hit the trails of Portage County, for miles of fun all year long. The Green Circle Trail is one of the region’s most popular trails, offering 27 miles to explore and connecting to miles of additional trails including the Tomorrow River State Trail and the Schmeeckle Reserve trails. For a more untamed experience, explore Steinhaugen Recreational Area, the Ice Age Trail, some of the Wisconsin State Natural Areas, and the George Mead Wildlife Area. Fun on the Water
Explore the variety of waterways in Portage County. The Wisconsin River winds through the region, making Portage County an excellent place for fishing, boating and paddling. One popular area is the expansive Lake Du Bay, but there are more than 40 lakes in the region providing a variety of water experiences. Kayaking and canoeing are popular on the Plover River and the Tomorrow River, as their winding routes are well suited for an enjoyable trip. In August, Stevens Point hosts Paddle Quest, a unique competition involving paddling, solving puzzles, completing challenges and making friends. Winter Fun
Don’t be afraid of winter weather because outdoor fun in Portage County is available all year long. For family fun in the winter, enjoy sledding hills and tobogganing at Iverson Park Winter Sports Area. For more speed, explore the downhill skiing at Standing Rocks County Park, which has snow-making equipment to extend the season. Cross-country skiing is available at multiple locations, such as Standing Rocks, groomed trails on the Plover River Trail segment of the Green Circle Trail, and in Iverson Park.
